Part 3: Flexible Online Tutoring Jobs You Can Start Today

There’s no reason you can’t start an online side hustle this year.

When I was in university, I had some friends who loved to teach. They had personal tutorial courses they held for students in the freshman year. They created mini tutor jobs for themselves by making booklets with solutions to the past questions for the courses they taught. After graduation, many of them dropped those skills at their university gates and have never used the teaching skills anymore.

Could you imagine that I ran into one of those university tutorial guys (let’s call him Former Student Tutor (FST) a few months back and here’s how part of our conversation went.

FST: I don’t have a job now and I’m as broke as a “bottle”.
Me: What are you doing with your tutoring/teaching skills?
FST: What teaching skills?
Me: The skills you used to teach Ordinary Differential Equation and Statistics when you were still a student in the university.
FST: I used those tutorials to survive hunger in school. I still love to teach but how will that pay my bills today?
Me: Do you know you can still make money teaching students all over the world online? You don’t have to meet your students in school or their homes. Your computer and internet connection is all you need.
FST:  Where? How? Show me, please!
Me: Here is a list of websites where you can register, once you are approved you start teaching to earn an income. At least it can help you patch up the broken bottles in your finances.
FST: I can’t believe I can still tutor online.

Where To Find Online Tutoring Jobs

Online English Teaching Jobs As an English as a Second Language teacher.
There are certain requirements and expectations to keep in mind. Most of these are similar across the different companies offering these teaching opportunities. A few of what to keep in mind are:

  • Your responsibility is to teach English Language to Chinese students through an online platform.
  • The company will supply the curriculum, lesson plans, and other resources used for teaching students on a one-to-one basis.
  • Summer is a peak time for this job even though it runs throughout the year.
  • You have to be tech-savvy (of course, you need it to operate the computer through which you would be using to teach)
  • Must be comfortable working with children and adults
  • Should be a licensed teacher or a university graduate eligible to work in the United States or Canada

Become an Independent Online Tutor

If you are not comfortable with teaching kids or don’t have the legal requirements to work in the US or Canada for ESL tutors, go ahead and create your own course. You can teach anything you want as long as you have a good command of the skill and can pass on the knowledge.

Host your course on online education platforms like:

  • Udemy – Earn money anytime a student buys your course
  • Skillshare – You earn money by cumulative watched minutes of your course
  • Teachable – Earn from student subscriptions on the platform
  • Lynda – Entry barrier here is higher and stricter. Only verified professionals can teach on this platform
  • Your personal website: Create your course, publish on your website. Keep all the money but be ready to do all the marketing alone. You can also list your course on all the above-mentioned platforms and increase your earning potential.
