Learn Computer Skills, Don't Be Left Behind

The level of unemployment in Nigeria has risen so high. Nigeria graduates more than 500, 000 students every year from her universities (private, state and public). This number does not include those educated abroad who return to the country at the end of their studies. The returnee graduates all come back to compete with the multitude who studied in Nigeria. Assuming you find yourself outside your country, what kind of job do you think you can do or get without basic computer knowledge? Learn computing or Information Technology (IT) skills today and stay ahead.

You Can Still Learn Computing Even If Your School Failed You

How are you going to compete with returnees with excellent computer skills and great work ethics? It’s quite true that the lectures in Nigeria public universities are still delivered on blackboards with chalk and whiteboards with markers. No powerpoint presentations. Computer science classes are still way beyond expectation.

I remember my first computer science class in my second year in FUTO. FORTRAN program was written on the blackboard. In this manner.

  1. Go To File–>
  2. Click File–>
  3. Select –>
  4. Right click “this”–>
  5. Copy “that”
  6. Enter –>>
  7. Blah blah blah… whatever this was supposed to teach me.

We would sit there and “Copy note”. At the end of the class, the lecturer will give us homework to write a certain program using FORTRAN. The students will shout, “How are we going to do an assignment using a computer when you taught whatever in God’s name you taught on the blackboard”? He would ask us to go to the school computer lab for practicals. Getting there, there would be no electricity. Okay, what about the generator assigned to the computer lab for these practicals? No fuel to power it on. Really??? It was just so frustrating to go to those stupid classes. The lab attendant whom I believe had plans with the lecturer to rip us off would opt to do the assignment somewhere in town if we contributed some money to him. Shame on these people. After waiting around for NEPA to at least give us electricity for a few minutes, we would just let them do the stupid assignment. By the way, do we even know what to do if there was electricity? Why? We learned to programme on the blackboard without touching an actual computer. We would still write an exam on this said course. SAD!!!

How To Learn IT Skills From Anywhere

Don’t worry if this is your case. You know all those time you spend at home waiting for the lecturers to call off their strikes. Holiday times. When you’re waiting for your call-up letter to go for National Youth Service (NYSC)? Use that time to register in a computer training class. In fact, you need computer skills now more than you need your degree certificate. Yes, that’s how important it is. Oh, lest I forget. You may have even completed your youth service and you don’t even know how to write your resume using Microsoft Word or create a simple spreadsheet in Excel. Ah! How about making presentations to your potential employer or presenting a report? Hold on. You need to learn all these basic computer skills, my dear.
